Profile of Hikaru Makino

Hikaru Makino was born in Oita Prefecture in 1941, the year World War II broke out. As a young boy, he helped his mother, a war widow, through her hardships.

In 1960, he entered the Faculty of Agriculture at Tottori University, where he studied hard and met Dr. Masaaki Toyama, the founder of desert greening research, who became his life-long academic mentor. At Tottori University, he majored in soil microbiology and acquired practical knowledge through fieldwork on the close correlation between vegetable horticulture, livestock rearing, and the environment. In 2010, he joined the Institute of Agricultural Economics, Kyushu University, as a researcher on contract. In 2010, he became the representative director of Green Hat International, which inherited the philosophy and practice of Dr. Masaaki Toyama, and is currently active under the motto "Green the Desert, Appreciate Life".

In October 2015, Mr. Hikaru Makino, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Green Hat International, and other related persons visited Mr. Alhat Hadmer, Director of the NGO Division of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) at UN Headquarters to attend an ECOSOC meeting to apply for UN accreditation for this academy.

Currently, Mr. Makino and his apprentice Matsuo are technical advisors to Royal Ster Desert Greening Agriculture.
